Holiday Giving

In our usual tradition, the department of Theatre and Dance will be adopting those less fortunate to help out this holiday season. Though we tried to narrow it down to one organization, due to equal interest, we found both a senior citizen center and no-kill shelter that will truly appreciate our support this holiday season.

Polk County Humane Society (PCHS) is a No-Kill organization that, with the help of foster homes, provides temporary housing and care for dogs and cats. And with their new shelter facilities opening the first week of November, they will have a greater than ever need for supplies to care for animals they previously had to turn away. In addition to the shelter, PCHS will continue to bring the dogs to the Springfield PetsMart on Saturday mornings to participate in the adoption clinic. The new shelter is just one reason why Polk County Humane Society is excited to be adopted by the Theatre & Dance Department for the holiday season.

Northwood Hills Care Center is situated in rural Humansville, Missouri. Northwood Hills has served the Humansville community for twenty years providing inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, return-to-home programs, and the highest level of senior health care. The staff at Northwood Hills Care Center strives to make tomorrow better than today for the residents they serve, and that is why they are overwhelmingly appreciative of our efforts to gather comfort items that some of their senior residents are missing out on.

To support one or both of these organizations, please see the donation lists posted outside Angie's office (CRA359). The collection boxes will remain there from November 1st until December 10th (last day of classes). She will then transport the items to each facility. There will also be cards to sign for the Northwood residents.

Everyone's favorite singing and dancing sensation will be PUTTING THE RHYTHM IN YOU in a special Sneak Peak Performance this Friday June 5th at 5:30 PM during Art Walk. Come on down to SOUND ON THE SQUARE and hear the exciting vocal sounds of Matthew, Mark, Luke, Juan and Abraham before they end their national tour at Missouri State's Tent Theatre June 10-20. The boys will even have a handful of Free Tickets to pass out to lucky audience members, along with a stylish Tent Theatre frisbee!

Opening night of the 47th annual Tent Theatre season at Missouri State University is rapidly approaching! As I can personally attest, the Tent Theatre staff has been working tirelessly in preparation for what is going to be a fantastic season of professional theatre right here in Springfield Missouri!

Every show needs a phenomenal set. The Tent Theatre scenic design crew has been hard at work building beautiful sets for all three of our shows:

Costumes can make or break any show, especially elaborate and colorful musicals like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which can be seen July 8-11, 13-19 right here Under the Tent! Thankfully, Tent Theatre has an expert costume crew who accept nothing short of perfection!

Bob Willenbrink Named Head of Theatre and Dance

SPRINGFIELD — Dr. Bob Willenbrink has been named head of the Missouri State University Department of Theatre and Dance effective July 1, 2009. Since 2002, he has been the Chair and Professor of Theatre in the Department of Communication and Theatre and in 2004 he was named the W. Paul and Lucille Caudill Little Endowed Chair of Theatre at Morehead State University.

"Bob brings a wealth of experience as both an administrator and an artist," said College of Arts and Letters Dean Dr. Carey Adams. "I know he will make significant contributions to the university and the community as well as to the Theatre and Dance Department."

"During my time on campus, I was very impressed with the commitment and vision of the administration, the dedication of the faculty and the enthusiasm of the students," Willenbrink said. "MSU is a prestigious institution and it will be an honor to work with so many quality people in the Department of Theatre and Dance, the College of Arts and Letters and the University.”

Willenbrink will succeed Mark Biggs, Associate Professor of Media, who is serving a two-year term as acting department head.

DR. BOB WILLENBRINK holds the Ph.D. in Theatre from Bowling Green (Ohio) State University. He began his academic career at Hazard (Ky.) Community College and for many years served as Chair and Director of Theatre at the University of Central Arkansas. While there, he created the Youth Theatre of Central Arkansas, was the national director of the ARC Performing Arts Institute for disabled artists, and was the founder of ACTS, a theatre troupe for disabled performers.

Throughout his career he has directed over 80 productions of various styles and genres at numerous venues. A former chair of Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region VI, he is a member of the Kentucky Humanities Council board of directors and serves as a director and first vice-president of the board of the Jenny Wiley Theatre in Prestonsburg, Ky. He serves as the director for the Kincaid Regional Theatre in Falmouth, Ky. and received the 2008 Distinguished Creative Production Award at Morehead State University.

-Altar Boyz -- a foot-stomping, rafter-raising, musical comedy about a fictitious boy-band!
-The Miss Firecracker Contest -- this explosively funny play demonstrates the author's unique gift for finding rich lodes of humor-and simple wisdom-in the zany activities of small-town life!
-Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat -- the sparkling family musical celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.

Department Head Candidates Q&A

Candidates for the Theatre & Dance Department Head will be visiting campus in the coming days. All three candidates will take part in a Q&A session with students:

-Dr. Paul Draper from Sonoma University; Wednesday, December 3rd at 3:00 PM, in Craig 207.
-Dr. Robert Willenbrink from Morehead State University; Monday, December 8th at 3:00 PM, Location TBA.
-Dr. James Bartruff from Emporia State University; Monday, December 15th at 3:00 PM, Location TBA.

Kacico Dance presents Light, Movement, Shadow, Sound

Springfield Metro area -Kacico Dance, Kansas City Contemporary Dance, presents Light, Movement, Shadow, Sound at Coger Theatre in Craig Hall on the MSU Campus. The performance is sponsored by the MSU Department of Theatre and Dance and is a free event.

Light, Movement, Shadow, Sound, is a contemporary dance treat as light and shadow become partners with movement and sound. Flashlights in the audience, sounds in the dark, and dancers revealed and concealed are just the beginning of the theatrical innovations of Kacico Dance choreographers Michelle Brown, Lindsay Spilker Tate, Shandi Miller along with guest choreographer Rebecca Bryant and composer, Don Nichols, both formerly from Missouri State University and currently at Purdue University. Light, Movement Shadow, Sound is the culmination of a process that included working with modules of movement, minimal lighting, a black and white color scheme, and original sound scores including one created from the sounds of tap shoes used in an unconventional manner. Section titles include Wednesday Evening, Lunar Moth, The John, Under My Bed,and Vectors. Among the talented cast of dancers is Julie DeLancey-Rudolph, a graduate of MSU’s Department of Theatre and Dance who is in her fourth season with Kacico Dance. Also performing with the company is Justin Hundley, a current student in MSU’s Department of Theatre of Dance. Justin interned with Kacico this summer and guest performed with the company in the premier of Light, more Movement, Shadow, Sound at the Kansas City Fringe Festival. Kacico Dance, a company of 9 spectacular dancers, always promises amazingly refreshing creativity and fun. Don’t miss this performance.

Nothing goes wrong in staging of 'Anything Goes'

've enjoyed many productions of "Anything Goes" over the years, but Tent Theatre's sparkling new staging of Cole Porter's 1934 classic is the most flat-out entertaining of the bunch. It's fleet, funny and perfectly cast from top to bottom. The music is well-served, the dancing adroit, the acting top-notch and the riotous stage business devised by director Carol J. Maples fills the spaces between the marvelous songs with nonstop delight, as if the Marx Brothers were invading a Rogers and Astaire musical.

Kick-starting the hit parade is the effervescent "I Get a Kick Out of You," sung and danced with sensuous verve by Natalie Hiatt as Reno Sweeney, the sexiest evangelist this side of the Atlantic. On a ship embarking for England she bumps into her old buddy Billy Crocker (Justin Roller). After trading "words poetic" with him in the witty "You're the Top," she agrees to help him win the hand of his true love, Hope Harcourt (Stephanie Elzea), who is engaged to the wealthy but hopelessly square Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (Seth Hunt).
