More News You Can Use
COM Week has been a great success, so far, because of your great response. As I was sitting in Jim Anderson's session today with the other students, I became even more convinced that you can benefit from networking with others and learning about how to get a great job BECAUSE YOU are a COM major. Jim spoke of how students can best position themselves for jobs: do internship(s), get involved in student organizations, work for a not-for-profit to gain experience (and feel good), be proactive in meeting people, and don't be bashful about yourself and your accomplishments. Lots of great advice and tips shared by a true advocate for our majors and one of our own (1971).
As a result of the overwhelming number of you who have signed up this week, registration is now closed for Friday's luncheon. However, you can STILL buy one of our great COM Week shirts for $10.00.
A note about Friday's luncheon--dress is business casual. You'll be meeting with alums of the department who have jobs and know others who might be hiring....so make a positive impression with a smart choice of attire.
Other news you can use: Consider becoming a SOAR leader! What a great way to earn money over the summer and put your communication skills to good use.
Student Orientation, Advisement, and Registration (SOAR) is preparing for orientation sessions for the summer of 2008. SOAR welcomes first-time freshman to the campus in June and July for a program designed to prepare them for success at Missouri State University.
SOAR leaders are students who welcome new students to campus, answer their questions, and aid them in registering for fall semester courses. The success of the SOAR program rests largely with the selection of outstanding student leaders. That means YOU!
Students who possess a high degree of enthusiasm, responsibility, and integrity are excellent candidates for SOAR. You can apply directly by going to one of their informational session. Or, ask one of our COM profs to nominate you at www.missouristate.edu/soar/nominate.htm. Once nominated, the SOAR office will inform you through e-mail or mailed letter that you were nominated. We will also supply you with information about how to apply for a position.
Interested students may find more information at www.missouristate.edu/soar/applyforsoar.htm, or they may attend one of the following information sessions:
